What is the School of Communication and Media Studies?

The School of Communication and Media Studies (ESCS) is a public higher educatin institution integrated into the Polytechnic University of Lisbon (IPL).

ESCS is recognised as a leading institution in the field of Communication in Portugal. The strong practical component of its degree programmes, combined with close links to the professional market, enables students to integrate theoretical knowledge with its application in real professional contexts.

The School offers four Bachelor’s Degrees and four Master’s Degrees in Audiovisual and Multimedia, Journalism, Advertising and Marketing, and Public Relations. It also offers four Non-Degree Postgraduate Programmes in Branding and Content Marketing, Communication and Marketing in the Pharmaceutical Industry, Sports Journalism, and Storytelling.

All Bachelor’s, Master’s Degree programmes and Non-Degree Postgraduate Programmes are taught in Portuguese. However, some Course Units are taught in English. You can consult the list of Course Units taught in English here.

ESCS has a highly qualified academic staff and a wide range of technological facilities that support the development of projects in the areas of television and video, radio and audio, and multimedia. The School is equipped with television studios (analogue and virtual), radio studios, a multimedia newsroom, video editing and post-production suites, multimedia laboratories, computer laboratories, and a laboratory for organisational communication.

ESCS also offers students the opportunity to take part in extracurricular activities, which represent significant added value for their personal, academic and professional development.

What extracurricular ativities are available?

ESCS’s extracurricular activities include:

• E2: the School’s television programme, broadcast weekly on RTP2;
• nAV: the audiovisual unit;
• ESCS FM: the School’s online radio station;

• ESCS Magazine: the online magazine;
• GAME: the School’s Marketing Students’ Group;
• PRLAB: the Public Relations unit;
• Pancadas do Infinito:the School’s theatre group;
• ESCS Mais Limpa: an environmental initiative.

Undergraduate Programmes

How many ECTS credits are required to complete the 1st cycle of studies (Bachelor’s Degree)?

To complete a Bachelor’s Degree, 180 ECTS credits are required.

Do ESCS Bachelor’s Degree programmes have any prerequisites?

Yes, but only the Bachelor’s Degrees in Audiovisual and Multimedia and Advertising and Marketing.

The Bachelor’s Degree in Audiovisual and Multimedia requires Prerequisite Group F – Visual and motor ability appropriate to the demands of the programme. This prerequisite consists of a medical certificate, in accordance with Annex VIII of the relevant regulation, attesting to visual acuity and the absence of any psychological, sensory or motor impairment that could interfere with functional capacity to the extent of preventing learning by the student or others. This certificate must be submitted at the time of enrolment and registration at the higher education institution to which the candidate has been admitted and is an essential condition for enrolment and registration.

The Bachelor’s Degree in Advertising and Marketing requires Prerequisite Group D – Visual Ability, which consists of the submission of a self-declaration provided by the Academic Services and signed by the student at the time of enrolment, declaring that they have adequate visual ability.

Postgraduate Programmes

How many ECTS credits are required to complete the 2nd cycle of studies (Master’s Degree)?

To complete a Master’s Degree, 120 ECTS credits are required.

If I complete the first year of a Master’s Degree, am I entitled to any qualification?

Yes. Successful completion of the first year of a Master’s Degree (60 ECTS) entitles students to be awarded a Non-Degree Postgraduate Diploma.
