The ESCS is one of four European institutions taking part in the BIP “Ukraine at War: Journalism Workshop”, which takes place from 16 to 23 February in Brussels, as part of the initiatives marking four years since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.
The Blended Intensive Programme brings together 50 Journalism students, 25 of whom are from theInstitut des Hautes Études des Communications Sociales (IHECS), the organising institution. Students from the University of Gothenburg, TU Dortmund University and ESCS are also taking part.
Representing ESCS are Maria Inês Rocha and Margarida Velez Dias, third-year undergraduate students in Journalism, Mariana Caparica, a first-year Master’s student in Journalism, and Ana Catarina Franco, a second-year student on the same programme. The students are accompanied by Professor Fátima Lopes Cardoso, Coordinator of the Undergraduate Degree in Journalism and of the Journalism Trends Laboratory at LIACOM.
The programme includes working sessions led by Belgian journalist Wilson Fache and Toma Istomina, Editor-in-Chief of The Kyiv Independent. Masterclasses will also be delivered by Iryna Kuznietsova, Associate Professor at Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University – Faculty of Journalism, under the theme “The truth is not enough. Why facts need emotions to win the war”, and by Kateryna Balabanova, who will address “The digital frontline: evolution of Media Consumption in Ukraine (2022–2026)”.
Throughout the week, students will work in international groups to produce articles and journalistic pieces in English on different dimensions of the conflict in Ukraine. The programme also includes a visit to the European Parliament, screenings of documentaries and participation in the conference “Ukraine in 2026: the year of peace”, as well as meetings with representatives of humanitarian organisations.
The work produced will be presented on the final day of the BIP, 23 February. The best articles or journalistic pieces will be published in The Kyiv Independent and in Mammouth magazine, published by IHECS.
