The European project AI-HED – Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education Teaching and Learning, of which ESCS is a member, recently highlighted a pedagogical innovation on its LinkedIn: the AI Tools Heatmap.

This tool aims to rethink teaching with Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Higher Education, offering a clear visualisation of how different AI-based tools can support digital competences and cognitive levels of learning.

The Heatmap organises tools according to two key frameworks:
DigComp 2.2: assesses digital competences, from information literacy to problem-solving;
Bloom’s Taxonomy: analyses cognitive levels, from remembering to creating.

According to the project, mapping AI tools is not only about organising the present, but also anticipating the future of education. In a context of rapid technological change, the real advantage lies not in knowing more tools, but in understanding how, when, and why to integrate them pedagogically.

AI-HED encourages lecturers and institutions to explore, experiment with, and combine AI tools, promoting an approach in which students learn to think with AI, rather than simply use it.
