Subject

Public Relations and Politics in the Digital Society

2nd SEMESTER / COURSE: PUBLIC RELATIONS STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT / OPTIONAL

The new media ecosystem has been challenging the balance of political systems and the way its different agents communicate. After an initial enthusiasm for the benefits of social media for life in society, dangers such as post-truth, the rise of radical discourse, or the fragmentation of public debate, have put the pillars of democracy in Western societies to the test.

Public relations, for its unavoidable contribution to the preservation of freedom of expression, and the construction of a public space for human understanding, plays a key role in defending the pillars of truth and preserving the democratic debate.

This curricular unit explores public relations in the context of digital politics, reflecting on its challenges, risks and the actions of different political agents involved in the democratic debate.
