Five undergraduate students from the Advertising and Marketing program traveled to Bergen, accompanied by Professor João Ferreira do Rosário, to represent ESCS in the European project Businet International Trade Mission.

Andreia Santos Filipe, Célia Delgado, Daniela Caetano, Diana Laranjeira, and Rui Pereira, students of the Advertising and Marketing degree (PM), accompanied by Professor João Ferreira do Rosário, traveled to Bergen, Norway, to represent ESCS and Delta Cafés in another edition of the Businet International Trade Mission project. This year, the initiative took place at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, from March 16th to 20th.

The initiative, promoted by the international Businet network, brought together 168 students and 25 faculty members from 15 European Higher Education institutions (from Belgium, Slovenia, Spain, France, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Portugal). Its aim was to provide students with a real internationalization experience. ESCS is the only Portuguese Higher Education institution participating in the project.

Delta Cafés, represented by Dinis Cunha, International Markets Sales Director at the Nabeiro Group company, showed full willingness to collaborate with the project from the outset. This included training and meetings with the team, as well as providing products and promotional materials such as DeltaQ machines and capsules, as well as coffee packages, both ground and whole bean, as gifts. In February, visits were conducted to the Delta Cafés factory and the Coffee Museum in Campo Maior, to allow everyone to better understand not only the brand but also the product.

International Experience

The project kicked off with students making initial contact with the company they represented — Delta Cafés — and working on issues related to the Norwegian market, such as identifying potential business partners, communication strategies, and more. During this preparation period, the group received training on the product and its marketing strategy, which facilitated visits to potential importing companies and helped in organizing various activities.

Once in Bergen, the host institution welcomed the European delegations for a week of activities designed for the students. These included: the Taste My Country event — a social and tasting session where each group shared food specialties from their countries; a student-only event organized by the Norwegian participants; a business pitch to the professors about the represented companies, where the groups highlighted key aspects such as company description, product offerings, target market, and competitive advantage; and the Trade Fair, where 48 companies were presented at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.

“Once Again, an Extremely Positive” Outcome

Professor João Ferreira do Rosário mentioned that during the pitch session, “the ESCS group received high praise, with special recognition for the presentation and the quality of its content,” emphasizing “the detailed explanation of project elements, such as research into distributors, competitors, and consumers”.

Reflecting on the initiative, the professor considered ESCS’s participation to be “once again, extremely positive,” highlighting “the networking between students and professors” and the opportunity for students to work with a real company — Delta Cafés — “which did everything to ensure the Portuguese representation in Bergen was a success.” “The project gave students their first professional experience in an international setting, through company and product presentations, contact with potential importers, and participation in a Trade Fair,” he concluded.
