The School of Communication and Media Studies (ESCS) of the Polytechnic University of Lisbon (IPL) hosted, on 16 July 2026, the AI-HED National Event – Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education: Good Practices and Resources for the Integration of AI into the Teaching and Learning Process, promoted by the AI-HED Project.

The initiative brought together teaching staff, researchers and education professionals to foster reflection on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Higher Education, providing a space for sharing experiences, good practices and resources for its integration into teaching and learning processes.

In the opening session, ESCS Vice-President Carla Murteira highlighted the importance of this initiative for the School and of reflecting on the role of Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education. The organisation of this event reinforces ESCS's commitment to the responsible and informed use of AI in teaching and learning.
 

Throughout the morning, participants discussed the challenges, opportunities and implications of using AI in academic contexts, from a critical, ethical and pedagogically grounded perspective.

The programme began with the opening session, followed by the keynote “AI and Its Biases”, delivered by Professor António Lopes (ISCTE-IUL), who addressed some of the main challenges associated with biases present in Artificial Intelligence systems.

Next, Professor Tatiana Nunes (ESCS-IPL/LIACOM) presented the results of integrating AI into curricular units, showcasing experiences developed within the ESCS context.

During the session “From the Classroom: Presentation of Good Practices”, Professor Vera Moutinho (ESCS-IPL/LIACOM) shared examples of the use of Artificial Intelligence in teaching contexts, highlighting different strategies for its pedagogical application.

O Prof. Bruno Amaral (ESCS-IPL) apresentou ainda um conjunto de recursos destinados a apoiar a integração da IA no processo de ensino-aprendizagem, seguindo-se uma sessão de reflexão sobre o uso da Inteligência Artificial no Ensino Superior, conduzida pela Prof.ª Ana Raposo (ESCS-IPL/LIACOM), que promoveu a discussão em torno das oportunidades e desafios colocados por estas tecnologias.

Professor Bruno Amaral (ESCS-IPL) also presented a set of resources designed to support the integration of AI into the teaching and learning process. This was followed by a session reflecting on the use of Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education, led by Professor Ana Raposo (ESCS-IPL/LIACOM), which promoted discussion around the opportunities and challenges posed by these technologies.

The AI-HED National Event represented an important opportunity for sharing and debate among teaching staff and experts, reinforcing the importance of a responsible, ethical and pedagogically grounded integration of Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education.

For ESCS, organising this initiative also represents an opportunity to consolidate its role in the discussion and exploration of new approaches to teaching and learning, while addressing the challenges posed by technological transformation and the growing presence of Artificial Intelligence in academic contexts.

The AI-HED Project (Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education Teaching and Learning), co-funded by the European Commission, aims to adapt teaching and learning environments in our higher education institutions (HEIs) to the changes brought about by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The consortium brings together the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences  (AUAS), the University of Applied Sciences BFI de Viena (UAS-BFI), the Polytechnic University of Lisbon (IPL) and the University of Zagreb (UNIZG).

The project seeks to explore, test and conceptualise the impact of AI on teaching and learning, strengthen the skills, competences and attitudes of teaching staff and students regarding the use of AI in teaching and learning, and develop recommendations for HEIs on the integration of AI into teaching and learning.
