Art and Communication

5th SEMESTER / COURSE: AUDIOVISUAL AND MULTIMEDIA

During the 20th and 21st centuries, the impact of communication and media on the Western culture and experience has led to a profound transformation of the social role of art, as well as its practices and discourses. The massive production of images, the pervasive expansion of design, the fading border between “elite culture” and “popular culture” and the close relation between art and technology, all frame a complex encounter between art and communication within the modern and contemporary experience.
What is the role of the communicability of art in the communication society? This question arises in the light of artistic practices and discourses of the historical avant-gardes and neo-avant-gardes, while questioning the pertinence of the “avant-garde” concept nowadays.
